Intake Interview

Before my in-person interview with JMH, I completed two online forms. The first form asked about medical history, vital statistics, and diet and exercise habits (Attachment A). The second form explored my “relationship to nature,” time I spend outdoors, the number of plants in my house, the area where I grew up, and the types of trees and plants I could identify from memory (Attachment B).

JMH read and interpreted the forms in advance of our meeting. She was an attentive, spontaneous, and warm interviewer. She established trust through leaning forward, pausing to think about things that I said, mirroring body language, and repeating information I shared with her. She asked follow-up questions and took notes.

Intellectual Stimulation

JMH reminded me of the basic facts of plant biology. She showed me some of her favorite plants and taught me the names of plants that I did not know. She shared with me her theory that human beings are happier and healthier when they feel appreciation for their natural environment. She helped me identify ways that I could spend more time in nature.

Her knowledge of plants does not seem to be extensive, nor does it exceed information already included in Dr. Duke’s database at the USDA. However, her presentation of the information is appealing and personal and is enhanced by the long interview process, which incorporates aspects of talk therapy.

Stress Reduction Ritual

For her clients, JMH will devise a personalized daily protocol that incorporates meditation, journaling, and cognitive reframing. She will exchange daily texts with clients to help keep them on track.
